New Delhi - India Asia Pacific Hernia Congress

It gives me particular pleasure to write to you in connection with the Second Asia Pacific Hernia Congress and Live Workshop, an event that I am associated with as President of APHS and Organising Chairman of the above conference. The Congress is being organised by the Minimal Access and Bariatric Surgery Centre, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, New Delhi (India) between 6 to 8 October 2006 in conjunction with Indian Association of Gastrointestinal Endosurgeons (IAGES) & Association of Surgeons of India.
The Asia Pacific Hernia Society (APHS) was formed in September 2004. The creation of APHS plugs an existing lacuna with the prior existence of the European and American hernia societies. The mission of the APHS is to provide a professional forum to address issues regarding evaluation and management of abdominal wall hernias (both conventional and by minimal access). The optimal management of abdominal wall hernias has always been a subject of animated debate in scientific meetings around the globe. Also, pathophysiology of hernia, metabolic tissue disorders and study of biomaterials (meshes) are currently subjects of active research. It is envisaged that the Asia Pacific Hernia Society shall organize regular scientific meetings and also support and undertake educational / research activities in the field. The first Congress of APHS was held at KL in November 2005 which provided the perfect start to the academic activities of the Society.
We are living in an era which shall be looked upon as a watershed when the history of surgery is revisited many decades from now. There is a virtual implosion of medical technology, communications technology and medical advancements in the global village today. The practising surgeon today is at his / her wits end trying to make sense of numerous developments occuring at rapid pace.
Hernia repair may be the most common surgical procedure performed by a practising surgeon today. It is apt that hernia management is an area that a Surgeon ought to be comfortable with. It is the solemn endeavour of the organising committee to present a scientific programme during the congress that shall address these concerns of a practising surgeon. We shall attempt to present the entire spectrum of hernia including pathogenesis, newer biomaterials and prosthesis and surgical approaches.
New Delhi provides the ideal gateway to Incrediable India. The month of October is pleasant and we shall leave no stone unturned to make your visit memorable.
